Community Foundation Awards $25,000 Grant To Support Cancer Center Campaign at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center

June 24, 2015 By admin

The Northern New York Community Foundation’s Board of Directors approved a $25,000 grant Tuesday to support the Richard E. Winter Cancer Center capital campaign at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg. The campaign is centered on enhancing cancer center services and programming through the purchase of a linear accelerator and building additional space. The Community Foundation grant assists the organization in reaching its campaign goal.

“Both this project and the Center have demonstrated how critical they are to the citizens of Ogdensburg and the entire region they serve. As we continue to explore ways to partner with donors to provide a better community, we are very pleased to be a partner in this meaningful endeavor,” said Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation executive director.

Other St. Lawrence County grants approved by the board were:

  • Volunteer Transportation Center – $5,000
To help launch the expansion of transportation services in St. Lawrence County
  • Lawrence University – $5,000*

Web development support for the “Nature Up North” project.

*-This grant is made possible, in part, through the Peter Van de Water Fund for St. Lawrence County. The Van de Water Fund is a permanent, charitable endowment to enhance the quality of life in St. Lawrence County.

The Northern New York Community Foundation makes grants to support the work of non-profit organizations and provides scholarships to individuals in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. This work is made possible by donors who have make annual gifts as well as those who have established permanent, charitable funds with the Foundation during their lifetimes or through their wills and have a general, broad and enduring interest in supporting the quality of life in the North Country.

“Giving back is so important because it creates a culture that, the more we give, the better it is for everyone — those giving, and those receiving. That’s very, very important. We can always do more and we have to remember that.” — Donald Whitney, Adams Center

Don Whitney came from a family of givers. He believed that helping your community in any fashion is part of gratifying life. We are grateful for having known him and even more grateful that Don joined us in 2017 to participate in the Northern New York Community Podcast. His passing last weekend deeply saddens us. The fact that his story — in his own voice — is forever documented is a wonderful part of his permanent legacy that will inspire generations to come.

Learn more about what called Don to a life of service to his community and others in this 2017 episode from the second season of the Northern New York Community Podcast.
