The Northern New York Community Foundation’s 2018 “Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge!” is now closed. Winners will be announced soon. We encourage you to check back as winning students present their grants and make visits to their chosen organizations.
About the challenge
In 2017, the Community Foundation selected 23 winning entries from more than 60 submissions and awarded grants to 19 local organizations totaling $10,000 in support. The top grant was a $1,000 award to support Meals on Wheels of Greater Watertown. The initiative strives to help students attending 7th or 8th grade in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties explore their concept of “community” and provide funding to local charitable organizations that exemplify and support what they feel makes their community a great place to live. Stage Notes Performance With A Purpose was a 2017 Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge partner.
The 2017 Challenge asked students from Jefferson and Lewis counties to explain in an essay what community means to them and to choose an organization that embodies their definition of community. The 2018 Community Spirit Youth Giving Challenge was expanded to include St. Lawrence County.
Students compete for a total of $10,000 in grant awards that the students themselves recommend. The Community Foundation and Community Bank N.A., our 2018 program partner, provide funding for the program. We are pleased to continue this program in the fall of 2019 with Community Bank N.A. as a partner again.
