January 31, 2019 By admin

Community Scholars Will be Notified of Future Event

WATERTOWN — The Northern New York Community Foundation Jefferson-Can Community Scholars dinner scheduled for Thursday evening, Jan. 31, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Watertown, is canceled due to the ongoing winter storm in Jefferson and Lewis counties.

Jefferson-Can Community Scholars and their families will be notified of a future event once it is scheduled. The Northern New York Community Foundation wishes all safe travels.

About the Jefferson-Can Community Scholars Program

The Northern New York Community Foundation administers the Jefferson-Can Community Scholars Program in collaboration with Jefferson Community College alumnus Stephen H. Can and the Jefferson Community College Foundation. The program awards high school seniors who are in the top 15 percent of their graduating class a merit-based scholarship of at least $1,200 for the first two semesters of study at Jefferson Community College. Since its inception in 2007, the Jefferson-Can Community Scholars program has provided scholarships totaling approximately $1.2 million, supporting 626 students.

Stephen H. Can, New Hope, Pa., is senior managing director and co-head of Strategic Partners, the Blackstone Group’s $31 billion committed capital secondary and advisory private fund of funds business. Mr. Can is the founding member of Strategic Partners, and Chairman of the Strategic Partners Investment Committees. Mr. Can earned an Associate of Science in Business Administration from Jefferson Community College 1980, a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in Accounting from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1982, and a Master of Science in Finance from the Krannert Business School at Purdue University in 1984 where he was named outstanding graduate instructor. Mr. Can subsequently earned a Certified Public Accountant license and Certified Management Accountant and Certified Financial Manager designations.

“Giving back is so important because it creates a culture that, the more we give, the better it is for everyone — those giving, and those receiving. That’s very, very important. We can always do more and we have to remember that.” — Donald Whitney, Adams Center

Don Whitney came from a family of givers. He believed that helping your community in any fashion is part of gratifying life. We are grateful for having known him and even more grateful that Don joined us in 2017 to participate in the Northern New York Community Podcast. His passing last weekend deeply saddens us. The fact that his story — in his own voice — is forever documented is a wonderful part of his permanent legacy that will inspire generations to come.

Learn more about what called Don to a life of service to his community and others in this 2017 episode from the second season of the Northern New York Community Podcast.
