2018-19 Jefferson-Can Community Scholars Announced

October 1, 2018 By admin

Stephen H. Can visits with this year’s Jefferson-Can Scholarship recipients during a fall reception at Jefferson Community College.

626 Students Assisted Since 2007, Totaling $1.2 Million

The Northern New York Community Foundation announces the 2018-19 members of the Jefferson-Can Community Scholars Program.  The scholarship, administered by the Northern New York Community Foundation, in collaboration Jefferson Community College (JCC) alumnus Stephen H. Can, and the JCC Foundation, provides scholarships to students from Jefferson and Lewis counties who graduate in the top 15 percent of their class. This year, fifty- one students will receive an award. Mr. Can had the opportunity to visit with this year’s recipients during a recent visit to Watertown. Since its inception in 2007, the Jeff-Can Community Scholars program has provided scholarships totaling approximately $1.2 million, supporting 626 students.

Stephen H. Can, of New Hope, Pennsylvania, is Senior Managing Director and Co-head of Strategic Partners, Blackstone’s $31 billion committed capital secondary and advisory private funds business. Mr. Can is the founding member of Strategic Partners, and Chairman of the Strategic Partners Investment Committees. Mr. Can received an A.S. in Business Administration from JCC in 1980, a B.A. magna cum laude in Accounting from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1982 and an M.S. in Finance from the Krannert Business School at Purdue University in 1984 where he was named outstanding graduate instructor. Mr. Can subsequently earned C.P.A., C.M.A., and C.F.M. designations.

“It has been an honor to partner with Mr. Can and the JCC Foundation to provide this unique opportunity for students in Jefferson and Lewis counties. We believe there are many benefits to the students, JCC and the community to make this type of investment locally, none of which would be possible without Mr. Can’s generous commitment to the future of our community, our country and the world, ” said Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation director.

Working with donors to benefit the community through grants and scholarships since 1929.

We are excited to share the Week 3 Scholarship Challenge Leaderboard!

In Jefferson County, Sackets Harbor Central took the lead with 50 percent student participation; In Lewis County, South Lewis Central held onto the lead, increasing to 25.35 percent student participation; and in St. Lawrence County, Colton-Pierrepont Central held onto the lead, still with 23.08 percent student participation.

All schools have a chance to win Community Foundation grant funding by increasing student participation in the scholarship program to at least 25 percent of the senior class.

The first round of grants will be determined in a Facebook Live event on Monday, February 23! That means schools only have one more week to increase student participation to 25 percent or more of the senior class to be eligible for the first round of Scholarship Challenge grants. So far, only THREE schools meet the threshold for the first round of grants!

Seniors: Do you plan to continue your education in college or trade or technical school? Winter break is the perfect opportunity to complete the Community Foundation’s online common application at bit.ly/nnycf-scholarships today and help your school win!
